When we were first thinking about what we wanted to do for our honeymoon, we both thought that going to concerts and shows would be a good addition to the trip. Once we had settled on our travel destinations and travel times, I went about finding concerts and shows that we would enjoy. There were a few locations that loaned themselves to this as we were staying long enough in one area. Vancouver was one of those places as we were staying three nights there.
I searched and I searched for shows and concerts in Vancouver during our three night stay and kept coming up with nothing that interested us. The best I got was Michael Buble, who would have been fantastic, but he was always a couple days ahead of us going around the world. We had a few favourite artists that we would have loved to have seen, and Harry Connick Jr. was at the top of the list. Kim and I love his music and had our first dance together as a married couple to Harry Connick Jr’s – All These Things.
I don’t remember when it was, but I was keeping track of several artists tour dates when Harry suddenly had a date scheduled in Vancouver, which would be on the second night we were there. I was ecstatic! I immediately searched out how to book the tickets. I found that some radio station in Vancouver was doing a pre-sale of the tickets, all you needed was the promo code from the radio show. The problem was I couldn’t hear the radio broadcast. But this is the internet, and I quickly did a search and found a very helpful blog post that gave me the code I needed. From there it was easy to quickly book some fantastic seats. I was very pleased with myself that day.
Before we traveled I tried to get in contact with Harry’s people. I knew it was a long shot, but I wanted to try and get a shout out to Kim and I for our honeymoon, and maybe play “All These Things” as well. I mean, come on, we had traveled halfway around the world to go to the show. Not to mention the fact that we had our first dance to him. Alas, the shout out and song was not to be. They were very nice about it, and we did get a signed print, but it would have been awesome if he could have done that.
Regardless of any of that, it was a fantastic show! I knew he was good, but seeing him live was something else entirely. At the end of the concert I clapped harder than I have ever clapped before. I later brought his Broadway show of the same tour, which is great, but it doesn’t come close to the show in Vancouver. Hopefully he will tour Australia again some day and we can go see him again. Otherwise, we will have to travel to the states again.
Sadly there are no photos of the concert. I would have taken heaps of photos if they were allowed, but I think I would have been caught if I tried to smuggle my DSLR in with a large zoom attached.
